Week 6: Fasting from Shopping for Non-Essentials
March 30th – April 5th
Entering into our sixth week of Lent, we are encouraging our faith family to fast from Shopping for Non-Essentials.
Many of us have a hard time saying no to the latest gadget, the new pair of shoes we found on sale, or little extras like the latest latte at Starbucks. Consider staying away from shopping this week so that you aren’t even tempted to walk down the clearance isle and gather things you don’t necessarily need.
Lent helps create more margin for us to be generous. Fasting during Lent is not about scoring points with God, but rather and emphasis in simplicity for the sake of others. By temporarily carving away some comforts or conveniences, good gifts from God himself, we hope to de-clutter our hectic lives, allowing us to focus. Simple living allows us to reserve time for others while also serving to curb our expenses and create more margin. Use this extra financial margin to bless others, especially directing those funds to the poor and marginalized.
Search your heart and go simple. Consider fasting shopping for things you don’t necessarily need. Live frugally, and do so for the sake of charity. Find a cause, or better yet a person, and give sacrificially. And, in so doing, may you know the joy of Jesus who gave himself fully to us.
Devotional Thought: Read 2nd John every day this week. Use these questions to help process what God is saying:
- What do these passages of Scripture reveal about the nature and character of Christ?
- What do these passages reveal about your own heart?
